After approximately a week’s break from installing new sidewalk on North Main Street in Hannibal, Bleigh Construction personnel will jump to the 200 block beginning today (Friday, Aug. 9). And with that work will come some major changes as parking will be prohibited on both sides of the street in that block.
“You can still drive down the street in that block, but you’re not going to be able to park in that block on either side of the street due to the construction,” said Brian Chaplin, project manager for the city. “Foot traffic will still be able to get through.”
The prohibiting of parking in the 200 block will last for a while.
“That’s probably going to go on until we get this block completed. That way we don’t have to shut anything down,” said Chaplin. “I want to make sure everyone’s businesses are still open and still running. We don’t want to shut anybody down, but we don’t want any parking in the block due to the construction.”
Chaplin reports that merchants in the 200 block have taken the news well.
“We’ve been talking with all the store owners who we can get a hold of. Everybody is in 100 percent good shape with this. They understand and will make it work, they say. They’re just glad to see us in their block,” he said.
Chaplin declined to speculate how long the work will last in the 200 block, noting that in addition to installing new sidewalk a storm sewer must also be put in on the east side of the street.
“I shouldn’t put a number on it because I don’t know,” he said. “There’s a lot to it. But it’s going to go quicker here than in the 300 block block due to all the storm sewer we had to tie in in the 300 block.”
