At noon on Friday, July 26, local residents driving through the work zone on Missouri 79 south of Hannibal experienced a change in their travel lanes on the way north into Hannibal. With this phase of the project half-way complete, northbound traffic traveling into Hannibal was shifted onto the new southbound lanes while crews pave the old northbound lanes.
By late August, the second phase of the project from Fulton Avenue to Continental Cement is scheduled to begin, and this section will be open to two-way traffic controlled by a timed signal. All work should be completed by mid to late September.
Missouri 79 remains one way only northbound into Hannibal with a reduced speed limit of 35 mph. A detour for southbound Missouri 79 motorists is signed over Routes T and N to destinations south of Continental Cement. Commercial vehicles are being routed over U.S. 36, U.S. 61, Business 61, and Routes V, T and N to Missouri 79. Access to tourist attractions such as Lovers Leap, Mark Twain Cave and Campground, and Sawyer’s Creek remains open to the public.
