At 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, the Shelby County Fitness Connection and the Shelbyville Pool will be hosting a “Runaway Bride/Runaway Groom” five-kilometer, one mile walk, one mile run, and kids run.
The run will begin at Kessler Park at the corner of North Adams and Main Street in Shelbyville. It will advance through the residential area and out by the lake. Participants are encouraged to dress as if they were part of a wedding.
The whole night will reflect the wedding theme. Registration begins at 5 p.m., followed by a costume contest at 6 p.m. Anyone can participate in the costume contest, regardless of participation in the run/walk.
The kids run (for 10 & under) will take place at 6:15 p.m. All kids will receive a goody bag. At 6:30 p.m. and 6:35 p.m. the five-K and one mile walk/run will begin.
Medals will be awarded to first through third place in each age group, male and female for the five-K, and trophies will be awarded to the overall winners, male and female. The one-mile run will award medals to the top three males and females, and the top male and female in the walk will receive a medal.
Following the awards (tentatively scheduled for 7:30 p.m.), there will be a prize drawing for participants. The reception will kick off with the overall female and male five-K winners tossing the bouquet and garter, and the wedding cake will be served (free for participants). The dance will follow until 10 p.m. Food will be available for purchase on the grounds.
Proceeds from the run will go to the Shelby County Fitness Connection organization to encourage healthy lifestyles, and the Shelbyville Pool for maintenance and repairs. The deadline for pre-registration is Aug. 1 to guarantee a race bag and T-shirt, but participants can register up until just before race time at the event.
