  • The Hannibal Board of Public Works took another step toward reducing the amount of water its system loses on Tuesday when a leaking pipe was repaired at Third and Hill streets.
The damaged pipe had been sending a small but steady stream of water down Hill Street, toward the river, since before the July 4 holiday.
"It's a small leak," said a worker at the scene, who spoke on the condition he not be identified.
Because of the location of the leak, the Missouri Department of Transportation issued an advisory regarding the repair project last week to notify motorists that traffic would be reduced because of the work zone. Flaggers were present to help drivers make it safely through the area.
Work started at 7 a.m. Tuesday. The project was expected to only require one day.
While the repair of the 6-inch pipe would be done in a day, the final sealing of the street would not take place until a later date.
The BPW recently undertook repairs at Third and Center streets.
