  • Nearly 75 percent of the 275 children who participated in Hannibal’s annual frog jump on Saturday, July 6, “rented” their frogs from Boy Scout Troop 100, according to Scoutmaster Chris Doyle.
Children jumped their frogs in two age divisions. Doyle reported the following winners.
    • Age 5 and under: First place - Laithin Lair of Quincy, Ill.; Second - Stella Young, Overland Park, Kan.; and Tucker Gergen, Hannibal
    • Age 6 and over - First place - Andrew Young; Second - Makenzie Davidson; and Third - Jace Lair
The youngest winner was Laithin Lair, who is 11 months old, Doyle said, adding that Tucker Gergen’s family has recently moved to Hannibal.
This was the first year Boy Scout Troop 100 sponsored the frog jump, a National Tom Sawyer Days event, after providing the frogs for rent in earlier years.
The Scout Troop was also selling frog jump T-shirts, and a large number were purchased, Doyle said.
The funds raised will help support Troop 100’s activities, he said. “They will help us continue to do service projects throughout the city and help boys go to summer camp and two young men go to the National Jamboree in Virginia.”
The two going to the National Jamboree are Life Scout Keith Ehert and Eagle Scout Doug Bross.
Troop 100 is sponsored by First Presbyterian Church. It is among 28 Scout units - including both Cub Scout packs and Boy Scout troops - in the Mark Twain District, which is part of the Great Rivers District.
Boys may join the Cub Scouts at age 6 and the Boy Scouts at 10.5 years.
