  • Tyler Stevenson, 12, defeated seven other boys to win the local fence painting contest on Thursday.
Isaac Wiley, 10, took second place, and Cody Glascock, 10, finished third.
Additional contestants were Aaris Stolte, 10; John McGuire, 10; William Dexheimer, 11; Drew Tweedy, 10; and Andrew Catalpa, 10.
The “over 30” fence painting followed the local contest. This year it had four contestants, including the 2012 winner, Mike Walker, 32, of Hannibal.
This year’s winner was Bill Sherman, 31, of Augusta, Ga., who brought an elaborate costume including a string of items hanging from his belt. One was a small metal soldier, which he said was a lucky discovery.
Walker finished in second place this year.
The third and fourth place winners were tied. They were Danny Vaughn, 35, of Hannibal, competing for the first time; and a visitor from Japan. He was 72-year-old Kiyohiro Yamamoto, who came form Aira, Japan, with his wife and a group of fellow travelers.
The next fence painting will be the state contest today, July 5, on North Main Street near the Mark Twain Boyhood Home. Registration will be at 3:30 p.m. with the contests beginning at 4 p.m.
The national fence painting championship will be on Saturday, July 6, with registration at 3:30 p.m. and contests again beginning at 4 p.m.
The Hannibal Jaycees, sponsor of the fence painting, reported on Thursday they would welcome more fence painting contestants.
