The Hannibal Cavemen went into Monday night’s game against Terre Haute seeking to equal their longest winning streak of the season - four. However, Hannibal wound up on the short end of a 4-2 score against the Rex.
The home team took an early lead, scoring single tallies in the first and third innings against Cavemen starter Dustin Lawson (1-1), who pitched into the sixth inning.
The visitors would shave their deficit in half in the sixth. Zach Nichols started the rally with a one-out double. Damon Walker picked up the RBI with a two-base hit of his own.
Terre Haute would answer the challenge by scoring a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out, two-run single by Izaak Silva into right field.
The Cavemen’s final run would come in the eighth inning. J. Golden reached on an error. He would eventually score on an infield out by Nichols.
A highlight of the game for Hannibal was the scoreless bullpen work of Andre Jones (1.1 IP) and Carl Brice (1 IP).
Winning pitcher was Louis Cohen (1-0), who worked the first six innings.
The loss dropped the Cavemen to 13-15 while Terre Haute upped its record to 17-12.
The Cavemen remain in Terre Haute for game two of the two-game set tonight. The contest begins at 7:05 p.m.
