Animal lovers need to look no further than Kirksville, Missouri to find a city that embraces pets and the people who adore them. From parks and projects, rescues and retail stores cat lovers, dog lovers, bird lovers, and more can pamper their pets in style!
In 2012, The Kirksville Leadership Institute made pet owners and pet-free folks alike happy when they fundraised to install doggie waste stations along hiking and biking trails in Kirksville! 3 stations were installed total, with 2 along the trail around the schools complex and 1 station on Steer Creek Trail by Queens Road. Keeping the sidewalks and trails clean of any pet waste helps encourage their use by walkers, runners, and cyclists with our without dogs! Local pet boutique Pawsitive Animalworks donated one of these pet stations on behalf of their business which offers a dog spa, obedience classes, pet gifts and more.
Kirksville also plays host two 2 animal shelters, seeking to find the right owner for every pet. The Adair County Humane Society is a nonprofit shelter located on Highway 6 West. In addition to finding a match for first time pet owners, the Humane Society also works to make sure lost pets find their way safely back home. The City of Kirksville requires that all animal owners obtain licenses for their animals and that dogs wear these tags whenever they are not on their owner's property. Additionally, one the Humane Society’s own board members writes a blog at Kirksville Daily Express as well! “Paws to Consider” by Bridget Thomas offers insights on pet ownership, safety, and health.
Field of Dreams Rescue is the local no-kill animal shelter and seeks to find homes for pets by placing animals in “foster homes” before they are permanently adopted. In these foster homes, they receive medical care, socialization and training. They host regular adoption days and maintain a strong online presence as well to keep locals aware of their services and find the perfect match for both pet seekers and animals. Field of Dreams was founded in 2007 and is operated entirely by volunteers.
Kirksville even welcomes the travelling pet lover! Brashear House Bed and Breakfast is pet friendly, and Cottage Grove Bed and Breakfast allows pets less than 20 pounds to lodge, as long as they are crated. Budget Host-Village Inn, Days Inn, Knights Inn, and the Super 8 all allow pets in their facilities as well.
