June 16, 1960
Congress passed the 23rd Amendment
The federal government moved to Washington, DC, in 1800. For 160 years, the residents of that city were denied the right to vote for the President and Vice President of the United States. On June 16, 1960, Congress passed the 23rd Amendment which would change that. Ratified by the states in March 1961 citizens who were otherwise eligible to vote, could now vote for the President and Vice President.
