Possibility remains that additional teachers may be needed depending on the number of students who will require and/or need summer school starting next month.
Summer school is only weeks away and the Hannibal School Board approved the teachers Wednesday night for this year's program.
But a possibility remains that additional teachers may be needed depending on the number of students who will require and/or need summer school starting next month.
"With the teachers I submitted to the board tonight, those have been approved with the numbers that we have," said Hannibal Assistant Superintendent Susan Johnson. "From this point forward, it may not change. But what we'll do is continue to monitor that and if we need to, we'll have to add more people, but there's no way to know that until closer to that time."
The summer school program is not only in place for students who need to advance for the next grade, but also for students to stay fresh in their academics. And with Veterans Elementary being used as the key facility, the number of students won't only determine how many teachers are on hand, but how much room will be needed.
"Usually we have a class size that we try to maintain as best we can," Johnson said. "If we have 100 kindergarten students we know that we need so many classrooms for it to be an appropriate size."
For now, Johnson says the number of students enrolled in the summer school program is less than the total number of students enrolled at Veterans Elementary now. Having room in the facility isn't much of a concern as much as having the proper amount of educators on hand.
"If we have additional student applications, we'll have to look at who we haven't hired and hire additional staff out of that pool," Johnson said.
