  • An adult bicycle rider was injured Thursday afternoon when the bike he was riding collided with a pickup truck on Market Street in Hannibal.
The bicycle rider was identified by police as Luther Robinson of Hannibal. Robinson was transported from the scene by Marion County Ambulance. The nature of his injuries and condition were not immediately known.
According to a preliminary scanner report, Robinson was unresponsive at the scene immediately after the crash. However, an onlooker at the scene indicated that Robinson was talking with emergency response personnel.
The accident happened shortly after 4 p.m. at Dowling and Market streets, just west of Eugene Field Elementary School. While police were still investigating the mishap, an onlooker reported that Robinson was coming down Dowling and struck the silver pickup that was turning west onto Market Street.
“I heard the impact up the street,” said Lee Myers of 119 Dowling St. “It was a big smack.”
Myers indentified the driver of the pickup as Mike Peterson of Hannibal, who is staying with his family.
“He had just left our house. He stopped at the stop sign and then he (Robinson) jumped off the curb and hit the pickup,” he said.
Myers said it’s not uncommon for bicyclists and scooter riders to pull into traffic in that area.
“I’m surprised it does not happen more often,” he said. “Kids don’t watch when they come off the sidewalk. He (Robinson) is old enough to know better.”
Lori Crane said Robinson is a frequent bike rider.
“He rides all over town,” she said. “I bet he won’t be riding his bike for a while.”
