The Hannibal boys’ tennis team’s individual season play came to a halt Tuesday when the Pirates’ singles player and doubles team both fell in the first round of sectionals.
“That knocks us out of individual competition,” Hannibal coach Jay Johnson said. “I felt we did a good job to reach this point. The boys really played hard and I am really proud of them. They gave it their best shot.”
Hannibal’s No. 1 singles player, Dhaval Katbamna, finished second indistrict play over the weekend. Tuesday he lost in straight sets to an opponent from Francis Howell North. Katbamna fell 4-6, 1-6.
“It was tough competition,” Katbamna said. “That means you have to step up your game. We tried our hardest, unfortunately they were just a level above us.”
In doubles action, Blake Hosley and Daniel Fohey won their district title, but that was as far as the duo would advance. They also lost in straight sets, 2-6, 4-6, to a team from Fort Zumwalt South.
“They were a solid team,” Hosley said. “They played very consistent and waited for us to make a mistake, then they jumped all over it. It’s been a good run.”
While the individual season is over, the Pirates’ season is not. By winning the team district title, Hannibal will advance to sectional play this weekend when the Pirates travel to Francis Howell North.
