  • Louisiana, Mo., has been without a grocery store since the Kroger Store closed, but that will change in about a year, when a County Market grocery store will open in the former Kroger building.
Meanwhile, major renovation of the building will be completed, according to Gerry Kettler, County Market’s director of consumer affairs. “We will be doing a $3 million complete renovation,” he said.
“We will take possession of the lease (on the property) on Sept. 1,” Kettler said. “We anticipate opening the store in spring 2014.” The hours have not been determined, but ”we would guess (it will be open from) around 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.”
The store is in the Twin Pike Shopping Center. Kroger store’s closing “left Louisiana without a grocery store,” he reported. “We are excited about providing a full-service grocery store to that community. They certainly deserve and need one.”
The store will be approximately 25,000 square feet, Kettler said. It will have a deli, produce and meat departments, in what he described as “a full-service grocery store.”
During the renovation period, he said, “we try to use local (labor) as much as we can, and we will probably employ about 75 people once the store is open. When the time gets closer we will probably hold a job fair for people interested in applying for jobs there.”
The parent company of County Market is Niemann Foods of Quincy, Ill., which is associate-owned, Kettler explained.
Kettler noted that “with our recent expansion into Missouri, this is a great fit for us. We also have a County Market in Bowling Green, Vandalia, Mexico and Winfield. We just acquired the Hickman IGAs in those four towns. All are open and operating as a County Market.”
These five new stores in Missouri are in addition to the County Market stores in Hannibal, Canton and Palmyra, Kettler reported.
Niemann Foods has more than 100 County Market stores in three states (Illinois, Missouri and Iowa),” he said. Niemann Foods was founded in 1917 and “provides employment to over 5,000 people,” Kettler said.
The Hannibal store is currently being renovated, while remaining open. ”We are excited about our growth, throughout our company - especially in Missouri - and that is evident with the investment we are putting not only in Louisiana but also in our Hannibal store,” Kettler added.
“We are looking forward to providing the Hannibal area residents an excellent grocery shopping experience.
“We will have a renewed focus on customer service, and a much-expended deli, bakery, and meat, along with a whole new look to the store. And we will have an on-site chef-made Chinese kitchen in the store.”
