Marie Helen Kinney, 83, of Quincy, Illinois, died at 12:48 a.m. Sunday, April 21, 2013, at Hannibal Regional Hospital in Hannibal.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12 p.m. Friday, April 26, 2013, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Quincy, Illinois. Monsignor Michael Kuse will officiate. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Edina, MO.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services Friday at the church.
The family is being served by the James O’Donnell Funeral Home of Hannibal, MO.
Mrs. Kinney was born December 19, 1929, in Stanford, Connecticut, to Oscar and Frances Levandowski Saunders.
She was married to William J. Kinney on February 15, 1958, in Quincy, Illinois. He preceded her in death May 16, 2008.
Survivors include 2 children: Mary Jo Mast (Steve) of Quincy, IL, John Kinney of Julian, CA; 1 brother, Thomas Saunders of New York; sister-in-law, Pauline Weir (Richard) of Pittsfield, IL; 3 grandchildren: Alexis and Austin Mast and John Cody Kinney, and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers: Walter and Oscar Saunders, and 1 sister, Emily Zarelli.
Mrs. Kinney was a graduate of the St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing in New York in 1950. She later graduated from the University of St. John’s in New York. Mrs. Kinney came to the Midwest to teach nursing at the St. Mary’s Hospital in Quincy, Illinois. She later became the director of nursing at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Hannibal, where she helped establish the Neonatal Unit. Mrs. Kinney retired from St. Elizabeth’s in 1983.
Mrs. Kinney enjoyed spending time with her nursing friends and her grandchildren. She liked flower gardening and volunteering with the Ladies of Charity. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and she was later a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Quincy, IL.
Memorial contributions may be made to Ladies of Charity or Blessed Sacrament Catholic School in Quincy, Illinois, in care of the James O’Donnell Funeral Home.
