  • John W. “Red” Bates, 68, of New London, Missouri, died at 8:52 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at his home.
    Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 20, 2013, at the James O’Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal. Brother Gary Legg will officiate. Burial will be at White Bear Cemetery in rural Hannibal, Missouri.
    Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the James O’Donnell Funeral Home.
    Mr. Bates was born June 6, 1944, in Hannibal, Missouri, to John W. and June Rouse Bates.
    He was married to Charlotte Ann Haycraft on August 30, 1963, in Hannibal, MO. She preceded him in death November 24, 2005.
    Survivors include 4 children: Danny Bates of Kansas City, MO, Tony Bates (Christine) of Mead, OK, Becky Ann Hirner ((Tim) of New London, MO, Christine Greenwood (Joey) of New London, MO; 11 grandchildren: Nicholas Bates, Ashley Bates, Justin Bates and Carlee Bates, Sarah Bates, Isaiah Bates, and Elijah Bates, Jacob Hirner and Caleb Hirner, Leslie Greenwood and Christopher Greenwood; 2 brothers: David Bates (Vickie) and Harry Bates (Barbara); 4 sisters: Gloria Light (Robert), Darlene Little, Dianne Honeycutt (Albert), Linda Culp (Gary); and numerous nieces and nephews.
    He is preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother, Eaffie Bates, and 2 sisters: Ethel Frericks and JoAnn Davis.
    Mr. Bates worked as a welder and fork lift operator at Titan Wheel in Quincy, Illinois. He loved his horses and chickens. He always had his faithful dog, “Jack” by his side. Mr. Bates was a devoted family man who worked hard all of his life to support his family.
    Memorial contributions may be made to the Donor’s Choice in care of the James O’Donnell Funeral Home.
    Pallbearers will be Gary Culp Jr., Jonathan Bates, Scottie Quick, Butch Frericks, David Bates, and Gary Wayne Davis.
