Back in a previous life I had a journalism professor who was always asking me what my lead was when I sat down to write a story. It was drilled into us that the lead was the most important part of the story. I try to approach these blog entries the same way. Usually I know what to write about first and in what order I want things to go into the blog. Today I am conflicted, I want my Cardinals to be the lead but the national championship game for college basketball is obviously of major interest as well. As any good journalist would do when faced with a major decision like that I flipped a coin. The Cardinals won!
After six games the St. Louis Cardinals find themselves with a 3 and 3 records. After losing two out of three to the Arizona Diamondbacks they went on to San Francisco and took two out of three from the Giants including a beatdown of the Giants best pitcher on Sunday. The Cardinals were totally dominated in the first game of the series on Friday as Barry Zito pitched an incredible game against them. The Cardinals would then win the next two games as both Shelby Miller and Adam Wainright put together excellent starts and in fact the Cardinals got excellent pitching all weekend. They have their home opener today against the Cincinnati Reds who will most likely be their main competition and possibly only competition for the NL Central title this year. The Cardinals and Reds have built up an intense rivalry over the past few years and I can’t think of a better team for the Cardinals to play for their home opener.
The Kansas City Royals are also 3 and 3 after their first six games. Like the Cardinals the Royals lost two out of three to the Chicago White Sox before heading to Philadelphia where they blew out the Phillies on Friday, lost a heartbreaker to them on Saturday and then battled back to win yesterday. The Royals have certainly showed they can score runs as they scored 25 in their games with the Phillies over the weekend. Their closer had back to back meltdowns which is certainly a concern but there are other pitchers in the bullpen who can step in if he can’t handle the pressure. The Royals have their home opener today as well.
Now to college basketball. After a tournament that saw my carefully constructed bracket in shambles after the first two days, we have come to the final game in what has been an incredible three weeks of college basketball. The Louisville Cardinals and Michigan Wolverines square off tonight in a game that on paper looks pretty good but I have to wonder if Michigan has the firepower to hang with Louisville. Louisville got their first real test of the tournament against Wichita State who did just about everything they could do to stop the Louisville onslaught. In the end though, Louisville’s relentless attack finally wore them down. Michigan had a little easier time but did appear to falter toward the end of the game and allow Syracuse to make the game closer than it should have been. I have to believe that Louisville has the talent to win tonight’s game but I do expect a high scoring affair and I also think the game will be competitive.
In one of the best basketball games I have seen in a while Drury defeated Metro State for the NCAA Division II men’s basketball title on Sunday. Drury becomes the fourth men’s basketball program in the Great Lakes Valley Conference to win a national title. As mentioned in last week’s blog Drury will be in Kirksville on February 1, 2014 to play Truman State in a GLVC showdown.
After a myriad of crashes and caution flags Jimmie Johnson hung on to win his eighth race at Martinsville Speedway on Sunday. I believe that Martinsville is the smallest track NASCAR runs on all year and one of the oldest but Johnson seems to dominate there. Danica Patrick finished 12th which is pretty remarkable considering she had never driven there before and isn’t used to driving on tracks like that.
The KHS baseball team is home for games today and tomorrow if the weather cooperates. The Tigers are still playing very well and getting excellent pitching.
We’ll be back on Wednesday with a look back at title national championship game as well as updates on all the other local teams. Thanks as always for reading this blog and please check out all the other blogs on this site.
Have a terrific Monday!
