Five games into the season and the Hannibal girls’ soccer team has not allowed any of its opponents to score. The Lady Pirates latest was North Central Missouri Conference (NCMC) rival Mexico. Hannibal beat the Lady Bulldogs 8-0 Monday night at Porter Stadium.

“It has been nice,” Hannibal coach Eri Hill said. “We are not winning games 1-0 all the time. We had the close game last week with Moberly, but our offense is providing the spark and the defense is playing really well.”

Theresa Sheffer led the way with two goals while the rest of the scoring came from five different individuals.

“It keeps the team morale up when they are all getting involved,” Hill said. “We have a few other girls that have scored a number of goals for us this year that didn’t score tonight, but we know that they are capable of scoring as well. As a coach, you like to see that as a team because it is tough for the other team to know who they need to shut down.”

Katherine Allen got the scoring started in the 16th minute when she scored on a free kick.

Sheffer made it 2-0 Hannibal when she recorded her first goal in the 32nd minute on an assist from Raylynn Charlton. Four minutes later, Charlton made it 3-0 when she scored on an assist from Paige Utterback.

The score remained 3-0 for the rest of the first half.

“Kaitlyn gets the shut out again in goal,” Hill said. “Five games and five shut outs. ... She didn’t make any offical saves, but she did make some nice plays for us tonight.”
