The Palmyra golf team picked up where it left off last season Monday afternoon as the Panthers won their season opener.
Palmyra traveled to Highland where the Panthers played a tri-match against Scotland County and Highland. The Panthers finished first with a 175, six strokes ahead of host Highland (181) while Scotland County carded a 211.
“I tought the guys played very well,” Palmyra coach Joe Brandenburg said. “Especially since we haven’t had that many chances to get outside. ... It is always nice to start the year with a couple of wins.”
Hunter Baggett earned medalist honors as he finished one stroke below par with a 35. Trevor DeHaan carded a 36 for the Panthers while Taylor Leftwich and Mitchell Sutter both turned in a 47. The Panthers final golfer, Blake Hobart finished with a 51.
“Hunter played extremely well,” Brandenburg said. “He had only played at the course one other time. So to shoot one under par the first night out was awesome.”
Highland’s Chase Berkley carded a 44 for the host Cougars while Dakota Elliott had a 38 for Scotland County.
Palmyra (2-0) will be back on the golf course tonight when the Panthers host Highland (1-1) in a match that was added after losing one to the weather last week.
