  • James W. Miller of New London has been identified as the man who reportedly died after being hit early Sunday morning in downtown Hannibal.
    The 52-year-old Miller died at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill.
    A 30-year-old Moscow Mills man was taken into custody following the incident. He was taken to the Marion County Sheriff’s Department on a 24-hour hold, pending issuance of warrants.
    Police were called to the Ole Milts bar, in the 200 block of S. Main Street, at 1:19 a.m. Sunday on the report of a fight in progress. Upon their arrival they found the New London man suffering from injuries received during the altercation.
    According to Elizabeth Campbell, owner of the bar, Miller was struck once outside her business. She declined to speak further regarding the incident.
    A witness at the scene, who spoke on the condition they not be identified, confirmed other media reports that the dispute was over a hat belonging to Miller’s son.
    Police report the incident remains under investigation.
