There was no better day to open the baseball season than Friday afternoon and the Hannibal baseball team didn’t let the day go to waste as the Pirates beat the Wolves 6-1.

“They played ok,” Hannibal coach Daryl Zessin said. “We had only been outside for two days. A couple of days ago we were able to get outside and take some fly balls and yesterday we took a few ground balls and some fly balls. It kind of showed, but we still played well.”

Hannibal got on the board quickly with a run in the top of the first inning only to see Western tie the game in the bottom half of the first.

After a scoreless second inning, Hannibal pushed another run across in the third inning to take the lead for good. The Pirates then added single runs in the fourth and seventh innings while plating two runs in the fifth.

Four Hannibal batters accounted for all seven Pirate hits. Trever Hertlien led the charge as he finished the day 3-for-4. Hertlien had the Pirates’ only extrabase hit, a double in the seventh inning and drove in three runs.

Brandon Scott was a perfect 2-for-2 and drove in two. The Pirates’ other two hits came from Austin Lewton and Trevor Anderson.

“I talked to the kids about this year trying to be a little bit more aggressive,” Zessin said. “We layed some bunts down and had a few hit and runs in trying to get people to move. ... We had people in motion and things were moving.”

On the mound, Eric Hugenberg got the start and picked up his first win of the season. Hugenberg allowed just two hits and one run over three innings of work. Hugenberg struck out four while walking none.

After Hugenberg, Dalton Overstreet, Jacob White, and Brandon Scott combined to no-hit Western over the final four innings.

“Our pitching was outstanding really,” Zessin said. “Other than the first inning, which I think was just first inning first game jitters really. I thought we did really well.”

The Pirates will have the weekend off. Pending weather, Hannibal will jump in North Central Missouri Conference play on Tuesday when the Pirates host Kirksville for their home opener. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.

“We are going to get back in the cage,” Zessin said. “We are going to do a lot of hitting and work on the normal stuff. Work on our infield play and see what happens. It is a little bit difficult right now because we can’t even get on our field. Hopefully it will dry out, but it is supposed to maybe rain and snow a little Sunday and Monday, so I am not sure we will get that game in. We will work on the field a little (today) and see how it goes.”
