The Hannibal Courier-Post agreed to serve as co-sponsor with the Central Park Neighborhood Association for a candidate forum scheduled for Thursday, March 14, at the Mark Twain Museum. Respected Hannibal attorney Branson Wood was asked by the CPNA to devise questions for the candidates, the answers to which would then help residents make an informed decision at the ballot box on April 2.
When the invitation was extended to the mayoral candidates, the CPNA committee members stated in a letter that the debate would be held as long as two of the three candidates agreed to participate.
Candidates Roy Hark and Monica Williams declined their invitations to debate, as has council candidate Jennifer Foster.
Bob Yapp of the CPNA has indicated that the committee plans to host the forum at 7 p.m. March 14, featuring Lou Barta mayoral candidate; and Mike Dobson, council candidate.
With respect to fairness for all candidates, the Courier-Post is opting out of coverage for this candidate forum. Instead, the editor will present a series of written questions regarding the city's current and future operation to each candidate, and provide prominent editorial and online space for their responses the week prior to the election.
