  • The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is nearing the halfway mark in the tax season and has filed over 200 federal returns to the IRS and over 175 Missouri returns.

  • The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is nearing the halfway mark in the tax season and has filed over 200 federal returns to the IRS and over 175 Missouri returns. Free simple income tax preparation is available to people making less than $50,000 through the collaborative effort of the United Way of the Mark Twain Area, IRS and University of Missouri Extension.  
    VITA sites are open at the Monroe City Senior Center on Monday; Palmyra Library on Tuesday; in Hannibal  on Wednesday at Douglass Community Services and Marion County NECAC;  and on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon at Hannibal-LaGrange University. Also on Wednesday a VITA site is open at the Gamm Inc. office at LaBelle and on Thursday at Heartland Bank in Canton. A site is also available at the Shelby County Senior Center in Shelbina.
    Appointments can be made by calling the RSVP office in Hannibal at 573-221-3892, extension 247. Clients must bring a photo ID and all credentials necessary for the tax prep process. New this year is a partnership with US Bank to provide a direct deposit debit card.
