Martha Lou O’Dear was born July 6, 1926 in Lewis County, Missouri to Aura and Margaret Daggs Holbert. She died at Beth Haven Nursing Home in Hannibal, Missouri on February 20, 2013, at the age of 86.
On October 2, 1949, she married H. C. O’Dear who preceded her in death on November 3, 1993. They were partners in his farming operation and owned the farm south of Lewistown that has been in the Daggs family since 1883.
Martha Lou was a 1944 graduate of Lewistown High School. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Education degree at what is now Truman University in 1947 and taught English for 25 years with the Lewis County C-1 School District.
Martha Lou was a 1954 charter member of the Lewistown We Moderns Club and also served as a district officer. She is a past matron and member of the Monticello chapter OES #383. Mrs. O’Dear belonged to the First Baptist Church, Lewistown, where she was an active member for many years.
Survivors include three children: Connie (David) Fox of Hannibal, MO; Carol (John) Schaller of Oklahoma City, OK; and Craig O’Dear of Kansas City, MO.; six grandchildren: David (Lindsey) Fox of Valdosta, GA; Amy (John) Fox Bleigh of Colorado Springs, CO; and Ryan Schaller of Enid, OK; Sydney, Cullen, and Cormac O’Dear of Kansas City; two great-grandchildren: Hadley Fox and Cooper Bleigh; one sister, Elaine Herbert of Quincy, IL; and one sister-in-law, Jeanette Holbert of Quincy, IL; nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, her brother, John Holbert, and brother-in-law, Maury Herbert.
Funeral services will be held Monday, February 25, 2013, at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Lewistown with Rev. Ted Middleton officiating with burial in the Lewistown Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Sunday from 3 until 6 p.m. at Arnold’s Funeral Home in Lewistown, Missouri.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Lewistown.
Pallbearers will be David Fox III, Ryan Schaller, Cullen O’Dear, Cormac O’Dear, John Schaller, John Holbert, and Todd Moore.
