  • The Hannibal wrestling team has a state champion in their midst. Chandler Fohey won all four matches he wrestled in during the state tournament to win the Class 3, 106 weight division state championship.
Fohey won his opening round match on Thursday and then won twice more on Friday to advance to the championship. During Saturday’s title match, Fohey beat Platte City’s Matthew Schmitt by 1-0 decision to take the title.
Fohey won the championship as a sophomore after losing to Noah Teaney of Oak Park his freshman year. This year Teaney moved up to the 120 weight class (and won the title there) while Fohey won the 106 title. Fohey finished his freshman season with a record of 35-14. Now, as a sophomore, Fohey went 49-2 to bring his two year record at Hannibal to 84-16.
While Fohey was the only Hannibal grappler to win a championship, he was not the only wrestler to place at state.
In the 126 weight class, Tyler Janes also advanced to the championship match. Janes beat Cody Middleton, Jonathan Melton, and Joe Disciacca to advance to the finals. However, Janes lost by an 8-4 decision to Bradley Perkins of Oak Park to finish second overall in the Class 3, 126 weight class.
After finishing his sophomore year with a 17-3 record, Janes led the Pirates in wins this year, going 50-5.
Hannibal’s final grappler to place at this year’s state tournament was Kyle Muehring.
Muehring finished the 2013 season fourth overall in the Class 3, 220 weight class. Muehring beat Justin Whitaker and Austin Herbst before losing to Jordan Moffett in the semifinals. Dropping to the wrestlebacks, Muehring beat Di’ontay Hatch to advance to the third place match where he lost to Jared Sheppard by a 2-1 decision.
As a freshman, Muehring made it to the state tournament in 2012 and won his first match before losing the next two. As a sophomore, Muehring improved his record to 43-8 while placing at state.
