February 13, 1826

Boston is home of first Temperance Society

The American Society for the Promotion of Temperance was formed in Boston, Massachusetts, on February 13, 1826. The organization, later known as The American Temperance Society (ATS), was co-founded by Dr. Justin Edwards and Lyman Beecher. Within ten years there were more than 1.5 million members.
