Despite Thursday’s rain, Missouri Department of personnel were busy trimming trees near U.S. 61 in Hannibal.
The work was focused near the near Fair Oaks Subdivision. Because MoDOT personnel were on the shoulder, southbound traffic was reduced to one lane from just south of the Steamboat Bend Shopping Center to Highway MM.
“Those trees were starting to lean pretty bad,” said Simon Begley, maintenance supervisor. “We just wanted to get them down while the time was right before we potentially had wind or ice that would bring them down. We’re being proactive, trying to get those trees that were leaning down safely.”
Begley termed the undertaking a “major trimming.”
“Hopefully it will last for quite a while,” he said.
Begley praised motorists passing through the work zone.
“Traffic behaved very well. I was impressed,” he said.
According to Begley, the hillside work will wrap up Friday.
