A man wanted on a possible probation violation in a neighboring state was captured following a foot-pursuit by Hannibal police around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The chase, which put the region between Central Avenue and McMaster’s Avenue on alert for nearly an hour, ended with the capture of the man by the boiler area of the Hannibal YMCA. A YMCA employee helped detain the man until police arrived, according to information gathered from the police scanner.
The first call that came into 911 indicated that a man who was at large had displayed a handgun. When the suspect was taken into custody, no gun was found. A K-9 was brought to the scene to retrace the suspect’s trail.
During the foot pursuit, the area to the north of Hannibal Middle School was on alert, with law enforcement vehicles posted along Palmyra Avenue. Officers were checking up on possible hiding places in the area of the Country Club golf course, the Hannibal Fire Department’s administration building, Holy Family Cemetery and Park United Methodist Church. Unlocked residences were investigated, as were areas where dogs were barking.
The Hannibal Middle School was on an extended lockdown, both during and after the search.
The incident was reported to have begun at the Manpower office on Melgrove Plaza, located near the F&M Bank’s north facility.
