A gunman boarded a school bus in Alabama, took a 6-year-old boy hostage and then shot the bus driver who tried to intervene, CNN reports. The man then took the boy to a homemade underground bomb shelter, where police are trying to free the child.
The incident began Tuesday afternoon and continued into Wednesday. Other children were told by the gunman to leave the bus after he boarded, police told reporters. The gunman demanded two children but was only able to hold on to one who had fainted. The bus driver, identified as Charles Albert Poland Jr., was shot four times. The FBI was allowed to take the lead in the hostage negotiation. It was determined the child had not been harmed. Authorities were able to send prescription medication the boy needs to take daily, coloring books and crayons down the PVC pipe leading to the bunker.
Two neighbors idenitified the suspect as Jimmy Lee Dykes, who was due in court today for shooting at the neighbors during an argument. They said Dykes dug the underground shelter at night, between 2 and 3 a.m.
    Quote of note
"As schools become better equipped to provide tailored, constructive support, teachers will become empowered to be students of their own teaching. Creating that kind of environment -- one that supports teachers' professional growth and better prepares students for life after high school -- is worth the investment."- Bill Gates, explaining why the Gates Foundation supported the Measures of Effectice Teaching (MET) project.
