Helen Martine Behring, 85, of rural Emden, Mo., passed away Friday, January 25, 2013, at the Monroe City Manor, Monroe City, Missouri.
She was born February 24, 1927, in rural Marion County, Missouri, the daughter of Notley Owen and Helen Rash Sparks.
Martine was a member of the Prairie View Baptist Church, rural Hunnewell, Missouri. She was a 1944 graduate of East High School, Denver, Colorado. She then received her teaching degree from Kirksville Teachers College, Kirksville, Missouri.
She previously worked for the Henderson Produce Company, Monroe City, Missouri. She then taught rural country school at Prairie View and Oakdale. Martine was an active member for the Hunnewell Senior Citizens, where she and her sisters organized and prepared many funeral dinners. She was one of the founders of the Hunnewell Mission Church. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking and most of all spending time with her family.
She married Walter Emery Behring, December 14, 1945, and he preceded her in death July 19, 2000.
Survivors include five sons, John Behring (Lynda), Hannibal, Missouri; James (Roller) Behring, Palmyra, Missouri; Don (Buckshot) Behring, Palmyra, Missouri; Gayle Behring (Richelle), Hunnewell, Missouri; and Gene Behring (Guyla), Monroe City, Missouri; three daughters, Mary Lou Smith (David), Hunnewell, Missouri; Laura Parsons (Donnie), Shelbyville, Missouri; and Jan Thompson (Adam), Monroe City, Missouri; one sister, Mary Sue Lyell, Hunnewell, Missouri; 22 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and one son-in-law, Larry Smith, Emden, Missouri.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter, Connie Smith, two brothers, H.O. and Harold Sparks, and three sisters, Adeline Roth, Frances Ratliff and Carolyn Bohrer.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at the Garner Funeral Chapel, Monroe City, Missouri. Rev. Andy Latin will officiate, with burial at the Prairie View Baptist Cemetery, rural Hunnewell, Missouri.
Visitation will be from 5 till 8 p.m. Monday evening at the Garner Funeral Home, Monroe City, Missouri.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Kenny Vahle, Greg Smith, Steven Smith, Todd Smith, Kenton Parsons and Janson Mudd. Honorary pallbearers will be all the rest of Martine’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Memorials have been suggested to the Monroe City Nutrition Center or the Shelby County “Meals on Wheels”.
