  • Areleta Laynelle Utterback, 90, of Monroe City, Mo., passed away at 6:02 p.m. Thursday, January 17, 2013, at the Monroe City Manor, Monroe City, Missouri.
    She was born April 6, 1922, in Warren, Missouri, the daughter of Ben E. and Martha Elizabeth Smith Burditt.
    She was a graduate of Monroe City High School, Monroe City, Missouri. Areleta was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Monroe City, Missouri, where she served as extraordinary minister of Communion, organist, lector and was also a member of the RCIA team, Daughters of Isabella and Altar Society. She was a member of the Quincy Cursillo No. 20.
    Areleta previously worked for Jeff Trussell Chevrolet, Monroe City, as a bookkeeper for five years and also for Kuhlman Diecasting of Monroe City as a secretary. She was the first woman elected to the Monroe City Council and served as alderperson from 1973-1975 and again from 1978-1988.
    She enjoyed building furniture, knitting, gardening, traveling, compiling family history and, most of all, spending time with her large family. Areleta was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan.
    Survivors include three daughters: Anne Carman, St. Louis, Mo.; Jean Kerr and husband, John, San Diego, Calif.; and Elizabeth McClintic and husband, Robert, Jenison, Mich.; five sons: James Utterback and wife, Marge, Mars Hill, N.C.; John Utterback and wife, Beverly, St. Charles, Ill.; David Utterback and wife, Mary, McCutchen, Cincinnati, Ohio; Mark Utterback and wife, Judy, Hunnewell, Mo.; and Greg Utterback and wife, Melodee, Belleville, Ill.; one brother: Charles Burditt and wife, Betty, Mexico, Mo. She is also survived by 30 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, two aunts, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and one special cousin, Polly Morthland.
    She was preceded in death by one son, Wayne Utterback; and two granddaughters, Sally Anne Carman and Amy Ann Utterback.
    A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 22, 2013, at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Monroe City, Mo. Father Mike Penn and Deacon Robert McClintic will officiate, and burial will be at Holy Rosary Cemetery, Monroe City.
    Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday evening at the Garner Funeral Home, Monroe City. The Daughters of Isabella will recite the Rosary at 5:45 p.m., and there will be a Parish Scripture Service at 8 p.m.
    Pallbearers will be Powell and Christopher Carman, Matt Utterback, Luke Utterback, Wayne Utterback, Chuck McClintic, Benjamin McClintic, Graham Utterback, Aaron Utterback and Andy Utterback.
    Honorary pallbearers will be Matt Lake, Erica Utterback, Jonathan McClintic and Camille Metzger.
    Memorials have been suggested to the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Monroe City Nutrition Center or the Bowling Green Hospice.
    Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Garner Funeral Home and Chapel, Monroe City, Mo.
