An alert citizen is credited with helping law enforcement capture a bank robbery suspect in Clarence Thursday afternoon.
The Missouri Highway Patrol reports that a white man wearing a gray, hooded sweatshirt entered the Community State Bank in Clarence at 1:45 p.m. Thursday. He held a handgun, demanded money, then fled the area on foot.
The citizen saw a white man matching the description of the suspect enter a blue Pontiac, which was parked in a nearby parking lot. The citizen followed the vehicle as it left Clarence onto Shelby County roads just northeast of Clarence, and notified law enforcement officers of the man’s actions.
Law enforcement officers found the abandoned blue Pontiac on a county road approximately 1 1/2 miles northeast of Clarence. They set up a search perimeter and utilized a patrol aircraft. A patrol canine located the man at 2:50 p.m., and he was taken into custody by law enforcement officers.
Cody A. Barber, 26, of Moulton, Iowa, was arrested for first-degree robbery and is being held in the Shelby County jail pending the issuance of a warrant.
Agencies involved in the investigation include the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, Macon County Sheriff’s Department, Macon Police Department, and the Missouri Department of Conservation.
