The Hannibal girls’ basketball team snapped its three-game losing streak with a 43-36 win over North Central Missouri Conference foe Boonville Monday night.
Hannibal started out slow in the first eight minutes of the game. By the time the first quarter was over, the Lady Pirates of Hannibal trailed Boonville 13-9.
But, as the second quarter got started, so did Hannibal’s offense and its defense. The Lady Pirates of Hannibal outscored Boonville 11-6 to take a slim one point lead, 20-19, into halftime.
Hannibal’s offense continued to pickup the pace in the third quarter. The Lady Pirates of Hannibal again outscored Boonville, this time by a 13-6 margin to take a 33-25 lead into the final eight minutes of play.
The fourth quarter was a back and forth battle between the two teams. Boonville just barely edged the Lady Pirates of Hannibal by an 11-10 score in the fourth quarter. But, it was not enough to overtake the Lady Pirates of Hannibal.
Hannibal coach Ron Greenwell said the key to the game was keying in on Boonville’s top player.
“The Edwards girl is averaging around 16 points a night and we held her to 13 tonight,” Greenwell said. “Jodeci Washington’s assignment tonight was to guard her and not let her out of her sight. She did a fantastic job of kind of keeping her in check so to say.”
Hannibal had only one player reach double figures in scoring, Lauren Holliday. Holliday finished the night with 15 points. Melanie Blase and Jodeci Washington both chipped in 8 points each while Paige Utterback and Kylee Anderson each had 5 points. Theresa Shaffer finished the night with 2 points.
With the win, Hannibal picks up its first conference win (1-4 NCMC) of the season and improves to 6-8 overall. Hannibal will be off for the rest of the week. The Lady Pirates of Hannibal will return to action one week from today (Tuesday, Jan. 22) when they go back out on the road to face NCMC foe Fulton.
