  • A man who had walked seven miles after wrecking his vehicle died early Saturday, Jan. 12, when he was hit by a vehicle in rural Pike County, Ill., according to the Pike County, Ill., Sheriff’s Department.
Officers reported Ricky L. Swarringim, 32, of Jerseyville., Ill., was struck by a northbound vehicle at approximately 5:28 a.m. Saturday on Pike County Highway 11. The sheriff’s department, Pike County EMS personnel and Illinois State Police arrived at the scene at approximately 5:30 a.m. Saturday.
During their investigation, officers said they believe Swarringim drove to Pike County in the late evening hours Friday, Jan. 11. After arriving in the Nebo, Ill., area, Swarringim saw friends and departed from a home in a white Buick car.
Officers believe he wrecked his car on Highway 11 just north of Pleasant Hill, Ill., in the early morning hours between 2:30 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. Saturday.
They believe he then began to walk to Pittsfield from the accident site and walked approximately seven miles, before he was hit by a vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Pike County coroner. Also assisting at the scene were the Pittsfield Fire and Rescue personnel.
The incident remained under investigation Saturday by the Pike County, Ill., coroner’s office and the Illinois State Police. An autopsy was to be scheduled in Wood River, Ill., to assist in the investigation.
