  • Through a collaborative effort with the University of Missouri Extension and the Internal Revenue Service, the United Way of the Mark Twain Area will offer free income tax assistance in filing 2012 income tax returns.
    This is the fourth year for the service in Northeast Missouri for the VITA Program (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance). The program is available to families with incomes less that $50,000 and individuals with incomes less than $25,000. VITA volunteers are not able to prepare returns that include business, farm, rental, or partnership income; complex capital gains and/or losses; the sale of property or itemization.
    Expanded locations for tax preparation this year will include Hannibal (Douglass Community Services, Marion County NECAC, and Hannibal-LaGrange University), Palmyra (Palmyra Library), Monroe City (Monroe City Senior Center), LaBelle (Gamm, Inc) and Canton (Heartland Bank). Appointments may be made by calling the RSVP office at Douglass Community Center RSVP office at 221-3892, ext. 247 beginning Monday, Jan. 14. A list of the required information will be provided when making the appointment. All information provided is protected and confidential.
    Additional sites in operation in Northeast Missouri include the Shelbina Senior Center and Shelby County NECAC. Shelby residents interested in free tax preps should call those offices directly for an appointment.
