  • A man on parole for the 1975 killing of an Illinois sheriff’s deputy has been arrested near Laddonia for trying to steal an ATM.
The State Journal-Register reports that Ronald Edwards was paroled in May from the Graham Correctional Center in Hillsboro. Edwards served half of his 40-year sentence in the death of Sangamon County Deputy William Simmons. But on Jan. 3 the 66-year-old Edwards was arrested with another man near Laddonia.
The pair is charged with burglary and other felony counts for allegedly trying to steal an ATM from a convenience store. They are jailed in Mexico, Mo, on $60,000 cash bonds.
The deputy’s 1975 murder was unsolved until 1992 when Edwards told authorities about his involvement. He pleaded guilty in 1994.
