The Hannibal wrestling team might not have had the night it wanted, losing to Mexico 50-30, but of the five Pirates who won, four of them came via pinning.

Hannibal senior grappler Jake Borgmeyer kept his undefeated season intact Wednesday night when he pinned Mexico’s Matt Pursley one minute into the first round of the heavyweight match. With the win, Borgmeyer improved his record to 25-0 on the season while picking up his team-leading 17th pin.

In the 106 weight division, Hannibal’s Austin Janes had the Pirates’ only forfeit win of the night when Mexico did not have anyone to match up. With the win, Janes became the sixth Pirate to crack the 20 win barrier this season. The forfeit win tied Janes (20-5) for the team-lead with Borgmeyer, six each.

After picking up a win via forfeit in the Pirates previous match, Chandler Fohey had an opponent this time in the 113 weight class. Fohey pinned Jayden Taylor in the second round for his 24th win of the year, moving into a tie with Colby Collings (24-2) for the second most wins on the team. The pinning was Fohey’s ninth of the season.

Also picking up his ninth pin of the year for the Pirates was Kyle Muehring. Wrestling in the 220 weight division, Muehring improved to 18-4 on the season when he beat Mexico’s John Lummis. Muehring’s pin came with 39 seconds left in the first round.

The Pirates final win of the night came from Tyler Janes in the 132 weight class. Tyler Janes pinned Mexico’s Scott Speaks for his 23rd win of the season. Tyler Janes pinned Speaks 29 seconds into the third and final round of the match. Tyler Janes (23-2) pin tied him with Brant Dooley (20-8) for second on the team with 14.

Like Hannibal, Mexico earned four of its wins by pin. The rest of the Bulldogs wins came by forfeit and major decision. Mexico had forfeit wins in the 195, 160, and 152 weight classes. In the 145 weight class Mexico’s Jake Vitale beat Colling by a 9-0 decision while Peyton Turner beat Dooley by a 12-4 major decision in the 182 weight class.

In junior varsity action, the Pirates lost 18-9. Nick Meyer beat Payton Samuel in the 138 weight class by an 8-6 decision while Harry Vessell beat Jaylen Lee by pin with 3 seconds left in the second round.
