The Hannibal Middle School boys’ and girls’ eighth grade basketball teams both won a first place trophy Saturday night at the Moberly Tournament.
The Hannibal Middle School boys’ eighth grade team won the boys championship by beating tournament host Moberly, 44-39.
“The boys fought hard and picked up the pace,” Hannibal coach Blake Niemann said. “They really pressured them and pushed the ball a whole lot and that made the difference in the game.”
Heading into the intermission, Hannibal trailed 24-12, but the Junior Pirates overcame that deficit and beat Moberly.
“Just like we have done three times this year,” Niemann said, “We overcame a 12 point deficit in the second half.”
With the win, Hannibal improved to 9-1 on the season.
On Friday, in the first round of the tournament, the Junior Pirates beat Fulton 42-27. Tonight, the Junior Pirates will get a chance to see Fulton again as Hannibal hosts the Hornets for a regular season game. Tipoff is set for 7:15 p.m.
The eighth grade girls beat Mexico 45-27 to win the girls’ portion of the tournament.
“They all did great tonight,” Hannibal coach Megan Zook said. “They got after it on defense in the passing lanes and on the floor.”
Jada Humprey just missed recording a double-double as she finished the night with 18 points and 9 steals.
Hannah Deien and Payton Oden each chipped in 6 points for the Junior Lady Pirates while Grace Deien contributed 8 points and pulled down 3 rebounds. Emily Albright had 4 points and 3 boards while Avery Sanders recorded 3 points, 4 steals and 2 rebounds.
