  • A storage building located west of the Hannibal city limits was destroyed by fire Monday afternoon.
The structure was located on Dogwood Lane off of County Road 416/Westover Road, just outside the city limits.
According to a member of the Ralls County Sheriff’s Department, the one-story building that burned had a residential address. However, it was only used for storage.
Reportedly the occupant of the rental property is Shawn White. While White was at home at the time of the fire, he declined to speak on the record regarding what transpired. White’s right hand was cut, but it was unknown if the injury occurred as he attempted to move items that were near or inside the structure at the time of the fire, or in his unsuccessful efforts to extinguish the blaze. It is believed that a Jon boat located near the structure was successfully moved before the flames could reach it. It was not known what items were consumed by the fire.
The building that burned was located approximately 30 feet north of White’s residence. Because of Monday afternoon’s gusty south wind, there was little danger of flames reaching the home.
Battling the blaze were approximately five members of the Hannibal Rural Fire Protection District. Water was being trucked in to the site and loaded into a portable reservoir. It was not immediately known if the lack of a nearby water source hampered fire-fighting efforts.
The fire was reported at approximately 1:30 p.m. Firefighters were still hosing down hot spots over 30 minutes after the initial alarm was sounded.
A cause of the fire was not immediately known.
