    Fire call
    leads to gruesome
    murder discovery
    Paul R. Potter charged with
    second-degree murder, arson
A Kirksville man allegedly killed and dismembered his victim’s body late Sunday night, according to gruesome details released Monday afternoon when charges were filed against the accused.
Paul R. Potter, 49, of Kirksville, has been charged with murder in the second degree, tampering with a motor vehicle and arson.
Kirksville Police responded to a report of a vehicle fire after 11 p.m. Sunday, beginning the steps toward a discovery of a much larger crime.
According to court documents, witnesses observed Potter leaving the vehicle that attracted attention. While investigating, officials learned of another disturbance near Nos. 169 and 170 Valley Forge Drive. Both units were on fire, and officers saw Potter throw two objects toward witnesses.
The objects were later determined to be human body parts.
    Potter was taken into custody.
Officers found a dismembered body in one of the apartments. The victim had also sustained multiple other injuries, consistent with knife wounds.
According to the documents, Potter made several admissions to his crimes and that he set the fires in an attempt to conceal the murder.
Potter is being held in the Adair County Jail on a $1 million bond.
The victim’s name has not yet been released by Adair County Coroner Brian Noe.
