The Hannibal boys basketball team played a close first quarter against Silex in the semifinals of the Highland Tournament, but the game got away from the Pirates in the second quarter as Hannibal lost 65-58 Thursday night.
At the end of the first quarter, just two points separated Silex from Hannibal. The Pirates trailed 12-10 heading into the second quarter, and that’s when everything fell apart.
Silex dropped a 20-spot on the Pirates as the Owls outscored Hannibal 20-13 to take a 32-23 lead into the break.
Hannibal never gave up though and fought back in the second half. The Pirates outscored Silex 15-14 in the third period to cut into the lead. Heading into the final eight minutes of the game, Hannibal trailed 46-38.
Hannibal outscored Silex again in the fourth quarter behind a 20 point quarter for the Pirates, but it wasn’t enough as the Owls scored 19 points.
The Pirates had three players finish the game in double figures. Senior Dalton Powell led all scorers with a game-high 26 points while Eric Hugenberg contributed 13 points and freshman Dylan Powell chipped in 10 points.
With the loss, Hannibal falls to 2-10 on the season and will play tournament host Clopton Saturday in the third place game. Tip off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the new gym.
