The Monroe City girls’ basketball might have finished the 2012 portion of its schedule undefeated, but during the Lady Panthers’ first game in 2013, they lost. The Lady Panthers fell 45-37 to Clopton in the semifinal’s of the Clopton Tournament Wednesday night.
“We have got to go back to work tomorrow,” Monroe City coach Cody Leonard said. “Thats all there is to it. They aren’t going to win all of them, they are going to come back again."
Monroe City (10-1) outscored Clopton by two points in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a 10 point decifit in the first half.
In the opeing eight minutes of play, Monroe City and Clopton battled back and forth with the Lady Hawks taking a 10-7 lead. In the second quarter, Clopton outscored Monroe City 11-4 as the Lady Panthers went into the intermission trailing 21-11.
Carly Spalding led the Lady Panthers with 11 points while Leah Albus chipped in 7 points. Monroe City recorded just three trey in the game. Olivia Crager, Spalding and Albus each had one.
With their first loss of the year, Monroe City drops into the third place game of the Clopton Tournament. The Lady Panthers will face Christian on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
