  • The high school basketball Christmas and New Years tournaments tipoff tonight for several area schools.
The Highland Tournament will consist of both, a boys’ and a girls’ tournament. Two schools will be playing in the Highland Tournament, Hannibal and Palmyra.
The Hannibal girls’ basketball team enters the tournament with the No. 6 seed. The Lady Pirates have a 3-4 record and will face No. 3 seed Clark County in the first round. Hannibal tips off at 7:30 p.m. today. Also playing in the girls’ tournament is Palmyra. The top-seeded Lady Panthers will play bottom seed (No. 8) Canton at 6 p.m. today.
The rest of the Highland Tourney features No. 4 seed South Shelby and No. 5 seed Knox County as well as No. 2 seed Macon against tourney host and No. 7 seed Highland.
On the boys’ side of the tournament, the Palmyra boys hold the No. 2 seed. The Panthers will not play until Saturday when they face off against No. 7 seeded Macon at 3:30 p.m.
Other boys teams playing at Highland consist of No. 4 South Shelby against No. 5 seed Clark County and tourney host Highland (as the No. 3 seed) versus No. 6 seed Knox County. Top seeded Canton will have a first round bye in the seven team tournament.
Highland won’t be the only location for holiday basketball. Over in Clopton, both the Monroe City girls’ and boys’ basketball teams as well as the Hannibal boys will be playing. The Clopton Tournament gets underway on Monday, Dec. 31.
The Pirates enter Clopton with the No. 2 seed and will face No. 7 seeded Barat at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 31 in the new gym. The Monroe City boys’ hold the No. 6 seed and will play third seeded Silex in the old gym at noon on Dec. 31.
Also playing in the boys tournament will be top seeded Warrenton and No. 8 seed Wright City as well as the host and No. 4 seed Clopton against No. 5 seed Louisiana.
In the girls bracket, Monroe City will look to continue its season-long win streak as the No. 2 seed. Earlier this season the Lady Panthers beat Palmyra in the Monroe City Tournament and then beat an undefeated Carrollton team (out of Illinois) at John Wood Community College’s Rumble on the River.
The Lady Panthers will play No. 7 seed Wright City on Monday, Dec. 31 at 1:30 p.m. in the old gym.
The rest of the girls bracket features No. 1 Silex against No. 8 Winfield and No. 4 Elsbery against No. 5 Christian. Tourney host Clopton will have the No. 3 seed and will face No. 6 seeded Louisiana.
