The Hannibal girls’ swim team traveled to Columbia on Saturday for the COMO Invitational and placed 10th out of 19 teams.
Five of the Lady Pirate swimmers advanced out of the premliminary events and on to the finals. Those swimming in the finals were: Taylor Bennett, Tessa Bieniek, Devan Miller, Emily Wilcoxson, and Kay Gieseke.
Gieseke won the 50 freestyle and finished second in the 500 freestyle.
Gieseke qualified for state in both events. She turned in a time of 24.47 in the 50 free and broke the Hannibal High School record in the 500 free with a time of 5:22.86.
Bieniek swam in the 100 freestyle and also turned in a state qualifying time. Bieniek’s time of 55.90 was good enough for a 6th place finish overall. In addition, Bieniek placed 7th in the 100 backstroke.
Bennett also swam in the 100 backstroke and finished 10th overall.
The Lady Pirates 200 medley relay took home a 5th place finish while the 400 freestyle relay finished 6th overall. Bennett, Gieseke, Wilcoxson and Bieniek were all on both relay teams.
While she didn’t finish in the top 20, Miller cut 5.67 seconds off her 200 freestyle time and came in 23rd.
Wilcoxson finished 18th in the 200 individual medley while knocking 13.34 seconds off her previous best. In addition, Wilcoxson also cut 13.22 seconds off her 500 free time and finished 16th.
Skyleah Johnson did not make the finals, but like the rest of her team, Johnson had success on Saturday.
Johnson swam in both the 50 free and the 100 back. Johnson cut 1.23 seconds off her best 50 free time and improved her 100 back time by almost 6 (5.82) seconds.
The Lady Pirates will be off until after the new year when they travel to McCluer North on Friday, Jan. 4.
