William L. (Bill) Harlow, 90 of New London, Mo., a former Ralls County sheriff, died at 10:35 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012, at Hannibal Regional Hospital.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 24, 2012, at the New London First Christian Church. Pastor Tom Day will officiate. Burial will be at Grand View Burial Park, in Hannibal, Mo., with full military honors by Emmette J. Shields Post No. 55, The American Legion.
Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Sunday, December 23, 2012, at Smith Funeral Home & Chapel of Hannibal
William Leslie Harlow was born Dec. 15, 1922, in New London, Mo., to Harvey Leslie and Lucy (Tude) Herron Harlow.
He was married to Vera F. Wolfe Harlow for 67 years. Vera died Nov. 23, 2012.
Survivors include one daughter, Carla (Gary E.) Van Meter of St. Charles, Mo.; three grandchildren, Ryan Van Meter of San Francisco, Calif., Garrett (Kasey) Van Meter of St. Peters, Mo., and Stephen Harlow of St. Charles, Mo.; a daughter-in-law, Janice Harlow Cohen of St. Charles, Mo.; and two great-grandchildren, Faith and Alex Harlow. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Vera; son William Leslie Harlow Jr.; his parents; and one brother, Raymond Harlow.
Bill served two terms as Ralls County sheriff, from 1961 to 1969. He was a 1940 graduate of New London High School. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served in the European Theater.
Bill had also worked in construction and was a master carpenter. He was especially fond of woodworking and cabinet making and built cabinets for their homes and even the jail when he was in office. He also had worked as a salesman.
Bill loved to go quail hunting with his son, Leslie. He enjoyed gardening, raising a small group of Black Angus cattle and working on cars.
Bill was a longtime member of the New London First Christian Church and was a deacon emeritus of the church. He served as property chairman for several years and still served as trustee. He was a faithful servant as long as health permitted. He formerly was a member of the New London Lions Club.
Bill enjoyed a lifelong talent of engaging people in conversation. He truly enjoyed visiting with people and never met a stranger. Bill will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
Pallbearers will be Garrett Van Meter, R.C. Harlow, Ron Hendren, Mark Rubemeyer, Dave Jarman and Gary E. Van Meter.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Gaylord Winders, Jim Eddy, Chris Misner, Steve Lewton, Stephen Harlow, Bert Howard and Ryan Van Meter.
