The Palmyra Bicentennial Public Library will become the Marion County Library Subdistrict No. 1 on Tuesday, Jan. 1. Library services will continue uninterrupted at 212 S. Main S. in Palmyra. The phone number will remain (573) 769-2830. The hours of service will continue as before with the addition of Saturday hours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday except on some holiday weekends. Scholastic service hours have been added from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday during which time the library is open for students who are taking online courses to use the public-access computers. Other library services are not available in those hours.
After the change some patrons will need to pay an out-of-district fee of $35 per year, per household. People who live in the Palmyra School District will be paying a library tax. Those who live outside the school district will not be paying the library tax and will be assessed the fee. The fee is based on the amount of taxes the average household will pay for the library tax. It is a per household fee, not a per person fee, so all members of a household may get a card for the $35 fee.
All patrons will need to renew their cards. Those who now have to pay the out-of-district fee will fill out a new registration card and receive a new card. Patrons who do not need to pay the fee will continue to use their yellow cards. However, those wanting a new card will have to fill out a new registration card and pay a $1 fee. If patrons have lost their yellow card they can fill out a new registration card and get a new card for $1. The contact information for each patron will be verified. New patrons who do not have a library card will need to bring ID to get a card.
Patrons who want to use the new ebook function will need to know the PIN associated with their library record. To prevent identity theft patrons will be required to come to the library to get the PIN and show ID to verify their identity.
