For the second straight night, the Hannibal boys’ basketball team took a lead into halftime, but were unable to hang on to it as Canton beat the Pirates 70-61 Saturday morning at the John Wood Community College Rumble on the River.
Canton started the game with the early lead, outscoring Hannibal 13-10 in the opening quarter, but like in the Mexico game one day earlier, the Pirates outscored Canton 24-19 in the second quarter to take a 34-32 lead into the break.
Unfortunately for the Pirates, Hannibal lost its lone senior, Dalton Powell, to a leg injury near the end of the second quarter. Powell finished the day with just two points and did not play at all in the second half.
The second half is where things once again fell apart for the Pirates. Canton outscored Hannibal 19-12 to take the lead and never gave it up. Canton took a 51-46 lead at the end of the third quarter.
During the final eight minutes of play, the Pirates tried to keep the game close, but Canton again outscored Hannibal, 17-15 to secure the win.
With the loss, Hannibal falls to 1-9 on the season. The Pirates will practice this week, but will have not play in any games until New Years Eve (Monday, Dec. 31) when they travel to the Clopton Tournament.
