Richard E. Murphy, 89, of Hannibal, Missouri, died at 7:35 a.m. Monday, December 17, 2012, at Willow Care Center in Hannibal.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 20, 2012, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Hannibal. Father Mike Quinn will officiate. Burial with Full Military Honors by Emmette J. Shields American Legion Post #55 will be at Holy Family Cemetery. The James O’Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services Thursday at the Holy Family Catholic Church.
Mr. Murphy was born June 23, 1923, in Hannibal, Missouri, to William Edward and Lyle Elizabeth Clote Murphy.
He was married to Kathryn Marie Hirner on September 11, 1948, in Hannibal, MO. She survives.
Other survivors include 2 sons, Daniel E. Murphy of Galesburg, Illinois, and Joseph F. Murphy of Springfield, Illinois; and 4 grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; 1 brother, Bill Murphy; and 2 sisters in law, Margaret Murphy and Annie Miller.
Mr. Murphy was a United States Army Veteran. He served during World War II during the invasion of Normandy. Mr. Murphy retired as a painter from Knapheide Manufacturing in Quincy, IL. Before working at Knapheide Mr. Murphy had worked at Murphy Motors in Hannibal. He loved the river and enjoyed spending time on the water. Mr. Murphy was a member of Emmette J. Shields American Legion Post # 55. He attended Holy Family Catholic Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church New Building Fund.
Honorary pallbearers will be David Murphy, Eric Murphy, Brian Murphy, Todd Hirner, Steven Hirner, and Johnny Verity.
