Sometimes it takes just one win to get things rolling. For the Hannibal Middle School seventh grade girls basketball team, that one win might have come this past Tuesday.
“I think taking our schedule one game at a time has helped us to not cave in when we weren’t winning,” Hannibal seventh grade coach Zach Campbell said.
With the Junior Lady Pirates playing their first game since earning a win, Hannibal hosted Elsberry Thursday night and won again, beating Elsberry 33-6.
“Honestly, no disrespect to Elsberry, but we didn’t play as strong as we could have,” Campbell said. “It was a little tough to get any rhythm going in the game because they slowed it down on their offensive end and played zone the entire game. We remained patient though, and got the job done.”
The Jr. Lady Pirates opened the game up with a dominating 19-4 lead in the first half. In the second half, Hannibal was just as efficient, outscoring Elsberry 14-2.
“Defensively we did a good job,” Campbell said. “We got in the lanes and anticipated what was coming next.”
Tamia Emerson led the Jr. Lady Pirates with 16 points while Morgan Miller turned in 10. Morgan Wells (4 points) and Tori Wilson (3 points) also scored for Hannibal.
With the win, Hannibal improves to 2-6 on the year. Next up, Hannibal will look to make it three in a row when the Jr. Lady Pirates will host Highland on Saturday, Dec. 15. Tipoff is slated for 10 a.m.
“I try not to put too much emphasis on winning streaks,” Campbell said. “It is easy for them to become unfocused on the next task at hand.”
