No action was taken in closed session by the Hannibal City Council Tuesday night on a proposal submitted from a party interested in obtaining the former Murphy Motors building.
While only one proposal was received, it went into a great deal of detail, according to City Attorney James Lemon.
“The one proposal they got on the Murphy Motors building is quite voluminous. They tabled the matter to give them time to review things, so it’s under review at this point and time,” he said.
City Manager Jeff LaGarce indicated that a thorough review will be undertaken before the Council’s next scheduled meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 18.
“The city council will be reviewing proposals in more depth over the next two weeks,” he wrote in an e-mail. “We were provided a lot of information to digest, and need time to further consider things.”
The identity of the party who submitted the proposal has not been revealed.
The City Council approved paying JA Properties, LLC, $220,000 for 422 N. Main St. at its Oct. 16 meeting. The purchase was finalized in early November.
While the city’s announced intentions were to raze the structure, that notion was put on hold after city hall was flooded with inquires about the property, which has stood empty since shortly after the Murphy Motors dealership was purchased by the Poage corporation in April 2008.
At the Council’s Nov. 20 meeting it was decided the city would accept written proposals for the North Main Street site and review them in closed session at its Dec. 4 meeting. On Nov. 20, the Council indicated that those submitting viable proposals would be invited to the Council’s Dec. 18 meet to further explain their vision for the property. It’s unclear if such an invitation will be extended to the Council’s next December meeting since the proposal was tabled Tuesday night.
The Council has previously indicated it has no interest in leasing the property. Mayor Roy Hark has gone on record as saying the city will not take less than it paid for the lot and building.
