  • President needs to sign off on Twain coin

    Its taken much effort.
    Its taken patience.
    Now all it needs is the signature of President Barack Obama.
    When that happens the commemorative Mark Twain Coin will be minted and the money used for purchases will go the Twain sites across the country including the here in Hannibal at the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum.
    "It's on the way to the president for his signature," Henry Sweets, curator of the Hannibal museum said. "Some questions were raised about the language (of the bill) and it had to go back. The changes had to be approved by both the House and the Senate and that's what was done."
    No tax dollars will be used to produce the coins which are expected to be ready in 2016. The Mark Twain House and Museum in Hartford, Conn., the Center for Mark Twain Studies at Elmira College in Elmira, N.Y., where Twain is buried, and the Mark Twain Papers & Project at the Bancroft Library of the University of California-Berkley.
    Money received by the Mark Twain Museum in Hannibal will go towards restoration of Grant's Drug Store near the Museum Mall. According to Cindy Lovell, executive director of the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum, Grant's Drug Store is on Missouri's most endangered building list.
